"The Speckled Band", and Doyle's other Holmes fictions, illustrate the ties between imperial ideology, and its contemporary culture and literary canon. In them it has been possible to perceive, in their absence, 'unspoken subjects', that is, the silenced voice of native cultures in the colonies.
